Photos of Orchids grown in our home. We have over 120 orchids that we have raised as a hobby over the past 5 years. The web page shows our growing areas, various displays, and lots of photos of the orchids in bloom. Also we started a White and Kahili Ginger rooting in August, and the Kahili Ginger has started to sprout growth approximately 1.75 in tall. The white ginger appears not to be taking sprouting. We added a couple of vanilla stem rooting also.
Because of the many different varieties we have, orchids are in bloom all year. This year (2005), late summer had the most orchids in bloom with many lasting several months.
By clicking on the images you will Bring up a larger JPEG view of them. Please enjoy the beauty of them as much as we have.

Cutting and Propagation
This cutting was created from a branch off the original orchid, which you can see in the first picture. The new cutting is the stem on the left branching down. Not knowing that the stem normally looses all it leafs, I mistakenly cut the stem thinking it was dead and that the new shoot on top was the new main plant. The cut stem was a thin leafless stem about 15 inches long. After noticing small shoots breaking out at the joints, I struck it into a bottle of water. After a few weeks, I notice the new out-cropping at several points along the cutting and some bloomed (picture 2). Notice the bottom of the cutting is stuck in a vase with water. After a month, small roots developed in the water. Carol struck the end of the cutting into a new pot. See pictures 3. Pictures 4 & 5 shows how the out-cropping has mature and produced air roots at the base and along the stem. The last picture shows how many of the orchids are starting to develop lot of air roots along their stems. This just started this year (2004). In prior years, all the air roots were at the base of the plant near the top soil.
With further research for the Dendrobium hybrid, this is what I found. They are a prolific group in that offset plantlets are frequently produced on the cane. When each offset has produced several aerial roots, it can be cut from the parent plant and will frequently flower after one year of growth. I'm in the process of producing a new cutting from an offset to how well it propagate.
With the orchids in bloom continuing to hold their flowers and new orchids coming out this month and late August, the house and garden is full of orchid blooms. There are still about 4 orchids still in buds. We have about 30 orchids in bloom at the current time including the ones shown in the August which are still holding their flowers.
Above are pictures of the kitchen with about 15 orchids in bloom.
